WHAT TREATMENT TECHNIQUES DO WE USE?

Manual Therapy

JOINT MANIPULATION & MOBILISATION

Manipulation is a technique involving a controlled, small isolated thrust to a joint. The joint is usually placed at the end of its movement, and the manipulation gives a therapeutic effect to the joint structures and surrounding soft tissues.

There may be a popping sound as a small suction pressure within the joint is released. This is normal and is the same as cracking your knuckles.

Manipulation is very technical and the experience and quality of the physiotherapist makes a difference. Assessing which joints need manipulation, the order and type of manipulation, is a learned skill and The Physio Studio has very experienced Manipulative Physiotherapists.

Manipulation

  • Normalises joint range of motion

  • Can improve joint stiffness

  • Releases endorphins which are natural pain relievers

  • Can kick start the body’s own pain mechanisms to help reduce painful joints

  • Relieves spinal pain including cervical headaches

  • Reduces protective muscle spasm.

Exercise

EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION

At The Physio Studio, we believe that exercise is the glue that bonds everything we do with you together.

It makes sure the hands-on treatments we do 'stick' between treatment sessions & that improvements you gain stay in your system long after you no longer need us.

Our physiotherapists may provide a tailor-made home exercise programme for you to follow independently at home in between your sessions. Sometimes we video you doing these on your own phone, we can email a written copy or give you a copy with pictures and explanations so you are as clear as possible how to get the most out of them. At each visit, these can be progressed and checked with you, depending upon the changes gained since your last visit.

Soft tissue release

SOFT TISSUE & MYOFASCIAL RELEASE

When you talk about a ‘knot’ you are talking about a ‘Myofascial Trigger Point’. There are no actual knots involved: in reality, it is just a small patch of tightly contracted muscle, an isolated spasm affecting a patch of muscle tissue.

This spasm/contraction usually causes the Trigger Point to cut off its own blood supply. A knot or Trigger Point is a patch of polluted tissue, a pool of metabolic waste products. Thus, the reduced blood supply to the area causes further irritation as there is no flow to take away the waste metabolites.

Trigger points can cause spectacular amounts of discomfort and it has been increasingly acknowledged by therapists that most of our daily aches and pains are actually caused by them… but their bark is much worse than their bite!

With a Therapist’s expert knowledge of anatomy and physiology they can easily be released using a number of different techniques. These vary from techniques like press and hold, dry needling and massage with movement.

KINNECTIVE: INSTRUMENT ASSISTED SOFT TISSUE RELEASE

Whether you have scar tissue, strains or sprains, chronic back ache or other type of aches and pains the instrument and Kinnective’s way of applying the technique achieves amazing results.

This technique uses a stainless steel instrument to release fascia and soft tissue. It is an effective way of quickly changing the flexibility of the muscles. The Kinnective simply acts as an extension of the therapists hands and is beautifully designed to amplify what is found in the tissues so also acting as a diagnostic tool.

Ask our reception team if your physiotherapist uses this technique.

NEURO KINETIC THERAPY

Does your pain and discomfort keep recurring? Do you feel like you’re chasing the pain? Treat the cause of dysfunction, not the symptoms.

NeuroKinetic Therapy® corrective movement system addresses the cause of pain – dysfunctional movement patterns stored in the brain.

Ask our reception team if your physiotherapist uses this technique.

ACUPUNCTURE

All our clinicians are certified with the AACP to use acupuncture alongside other treatment modalities. Recent studies have shown that it is very effective in relieving pain.

Used within your physiotherapy session, needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body’s own internal regulating system.

Acupuncture is widely used in the treatment of stroke rehabilitation, headache, menstrual cramps, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, osteoarthritis, low-back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and many other conditions. Recent studies have demonstrated pain relief and improved function for people with osteoarthritis of the knee.

KINESIO TAPING / SPORTS TAPE

The Kinesio Taping® Method is a definitive rehabilitative taping technique that is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion as well as providing extended soft tissue manipulation to prolong the benefits of manual therapy administered within the clinical setting.

PHYSIO-LED PILATES ( 1:1 or MAT CLASSES)

Pilates suits all ages and fitness levels and is particularly beneficial for those with back pain, poor posture, neurological conditions, sports injuries, arthritis, stress related illness and before and after pregnancy.

At the Physio Studio we understand that to get the most out of our bodies we need confidence that we are moving in the right way and doing the right things to help ourselves.

That’s why we only have specialist physiotherapists trained at the highest level in Pilates to run our classes. They understand the way you move and understand the way you want to be able to move. You can then progress more quickly and safely.
