Back and neck pain

Nine out of ten people develop back or neck pain during their lifetime. Back pain can be debilitating, affecting all aspects of your life. Surgery is only necessary for a minority of back pain sufferers, while the majority use other means to manage their back problem. The risk factors for developing back pain include a family history of back pain, prolonged standing or sitting, heavy repetitive work, obesity, poor general fitness and following abdominal surgery.

back pain treatment

At The PhysioStudio, our experienced physiotherapists will discuss how your back pain affects your lifestyle and examine your back's joints, muscles and nerves in detail. They will identify factors affecting your back problem, such as localised areas of stiffness in the spine due to prolonged sitting, or specific muscle weaknesses that have developed over a period of time.

We use a number of methods to successfully treat back and neck pain. These include deep soft tissue massaging, joint mobilisation and manipulation. No two individuals with back pain have the same problems and therefore individual management plans are developed. We are able to give specialist advice on exercises to strengthen your back, returning to sport and general exercise, beds and pillows, work stations and working positions.

At the Physio Studio, we can offer "manipulation" as a specific treatment to address back pain. Manipulation is a specific skill, and not all physiotherapists are qualified to offer manipulation. Many osteopaths and chiropractic clinics offer manipulation for low back pain, neck pain, sciatica, chronic back pain, back ache, lower back problems, etc., but may not pay the same attention to the musculo-skeletal harmony that is required for long-term back-pain improvement. Many recurring aches and pains are related partly to skeletal issues, and partly to the way that our muscles act and interact with our bones and joints. Manipulation by itself can offer short-term benefits: manipulation and physiotherapy combined can offer longer-term benefits. Acupuncture is another technique that can help relieve some types of pain, and the Physio Studio can offer acupuncture when a patient's symptoms suggest that it may be beneficial.  We believe that the holistic care approach adopted by our physiotherapists is more likely to offer long term benefits in relieving back pain than the narrower focus of many osteopaths and chiropractors.

Clinical Pilates can often help to address deep-rooted back pain problems. At the Physio Studio, we specialise in Pilates courses, and our specialist Pilates physiotherapists will assess your own condition and suitability for Pilates treatment.
